Last day at Catania

Friday, 8 July

At 9am we started to roll ourselves out of bed and cleaned up the place before we did our last few hours of touring around Catania. We walked by the duomo again to take a few shots before heading to the Teatro Greco, which cost €4 to enter. We decided to skip it since we didn't think it would be as impressive as the one at Taormina.

We then wandered to the San Nicolo church, the biggest church in Sicily. It was destroyed by the eruption of Etna and an earthquake in the past. A man with his two girls there explained they were rebuilding it because it's viewed as holy as the flows of lava never destroyed the monastery, as it went around it. Thus, this huge church is under a lot of renovation now. It was pretty cool to see.

The next stop was at the best pastry shop in Catania, Savia. Along the way we did some shopping, which included Anders buying a new white swatch watch that I'm totally going to borrow. Savia was absolutely delicious, besides Anders getting told off for not understanding it was a self service place. He was not happy about that and was still complaining about it 20mins after we left the place. We had a bread thing stuffed with tomatoes, aubergines, ham, and cheese. We also had the best cannoli ever and a strawberry tart. That was definitely a memorable place.

On our way back to the hotel we stopped by the Villa Belini garden. We walked around inside for a while, but Anders was convinced that it was not the right garden. Thus we asked someone and the guy assured us it was until he said an abrupt, short, high pitched "Bye"...Anders noticed that's how the Italians say bye.

We reached the b&b at 3pm, as planned. We gave some tips to some Germans that had just arrived there before heading to our airport bus. Finding the airport bus was a bit aggravating. We were both very hot, thus cranky. We weren't sure if we were standing at the right spot. All I knew was we needed to get on bus 447. I asked several bus drivers, and we eventually got on the right spot, exactly when the bus arrived.

At the airport, we had our last mozzarella and prosciutto panini and pizza. We waited at the wrong gate until 20mins before the flight was departing. Good thing I asked Anders to check on it. We were one of the last ones to board on our flight to Malta.

The flight was fairly easy going. It was a quick 30mins, and I slept through most of it. We are now very excited to explore Malta with Charlon and Nina.
