This was definitely the best night sleep of the trip so far. Perfect start to the birthday celebration. Our plan today was to take it easy and just drive around checking out the outskirts of Georgetown with the car.
First stop - breakfast! This is the best breakfast buffet ever! They had a western breakfast station, which made all the staples like omelets, fried eggs, French toast, and pancakes. That was ehhh. The cool thing was he Asian station with different noodles freshly stir fried. I of course had the classic Penang kweoy teo. On top of it, Nasi Lenak, congee and some Indian curry and samba...along with fresh fruits, fresh juice, and nice cup of tea. Anders had the boring, yet classic, omelet, fruits, coffee and some celery something juice. We were both extremely satisfied and didn't want to leave.
With full bellies, we were ready to brave the drive around Penang again. I'm the navigator and Anders is the driver. As you can imagine, there were many moments of frustration with getting lost constantly. Luckily we didn't kill each other, although there were close moments.
Since anders have a "thing" for temples, we decided to go to one of the biggest kek lok si temple. It took us a while to find the entrance, as it was many temples in one. It was actually very commercial for it being a place of worship. There were souvenir shops everywhere, one of them being wishing ribbons. We decided to buy a wish of being together forever :-) Anyhow, it was still pretty cool to see the huge Buddha statue they were building. We also had the chance to figure out what Chinese horoscope anders was. He was fantasizing something cool like the tiger or dragon, unfortunately it was the dirty sneaky rat. Hee hee hee. We took pictures with our zodiacs. On the top o the temple, we got a good view of Penang. It was so good that we considered not going to Penang Hill for the view of Georgetown. Well, actually it was because it was so freakin hot and the hotel pool seemed more tempting. To just be sure we weren't missing out, we've asked the people working at the temple if the view was different. And they confirmed it was. So we got our hot sweaty mess together and went to the car to find Penang Hill.
It was easy-peasy to find Penang hill...well almost. We had trouble finding parking. Anders and I did some debating before I was willing I pay what equated to a few dollars to park. My main objection was that it was far away, but then I found out there was a walkway to the entrance of Penang Hill. Anders was fortunately correct.
We arrived 20mins before the departure of the funicular. To cool down, we bought some drinks. Anders did the classic coke, while I got the grass jelly juice. Anders was not a fan. Anyhow, we gad a lot of fun waiting for our turn up the hill. So much fun and laughter that we almost missed it. We jumped in the last minute, so we were squeeze between people. The ride up the funicular was pretty cool. It was interesting to read how there has been several versions of it before they got it correct, or the modern version of it. It was also amazing to find out the immediate drop of temperature by 5-10 degrees.
This is the place the elite went in the olf days to escape from the heat. It was filled with "forest" paths and beautiful resting spots. We decided to take a walk around to check it out. We were followed by an Chinese family, which I was fascinated by the way they interacted, at least until we met the monkeys. We were at a view point and there were monkeys that were apparently used to picking food out of the trash. It was a family of three, an adult and two kids. The only reason I knew was because the older monkey was clearly disciplining the younger one and took all the goodies first. They also seemed quite aggressive, to the extent I was scared, which is not often. They were hissing at each other. Not a pretty site.
